Description This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to respond to emergencies and abnormal situations when driving a medium/heavy on-track vehicle in accordance with regulatory requirements, relevant codes of practice and workplace procedures. Licensing or certification requirements are not applicable to this unit.
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.
Learning Outcomes and Application It involves the application of workplace procedures and regulatory requirements when responding to emergencies and abnormal situations as part of work activities in a range of contexts across the Australian rail system.

Element: Identify emergency or abnormal situation
  • Emergency, potential emergency or abnormal situations are identified and assessed, and needs are prioritised in accordance with organisational and/or network emergency response plans and procedures
  • Implications of the emergency, potential emergency or abnormal situation are evaluated in accordance with organisational and/or network requirements and procedures
       
Element: Respond to emergency or abnormal situations
  • Actions are considered in accordance with organisational and/or network procedures and regulatory requirements
  • Relevant personnel are alerted to the emergency, potential emergency or abnormal situation in accordance with organisational and/or network emergency procedures and plans
  • Communications are maintained with relevant personnel to determine appropriate course of action
  • Response is taken in accordance with organisational and/or network procedures, received instructions from relevant personnel, regulatory requirements and emergency response plan where relevant
  • Safety incidents and emergencies are handled appropriately in accordance with established response plan and within limits of responsibility and duty of care

Assessment must include exercises which demonstrate competent performance of the following in a range of situations:

identifying typical emergencies or abnormal situations that may occur

explaining possible responses to identified emergency or abnormal situations

communicating effectively with relevant personnel when responding to an emergency or abnormal situation

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Performance is demonstrated consistently over a period of time and in a suitable range of contexts

Resources for assessment include:

a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or other simulated practical and knowledge assessment, and/or

access to an appropriate range of relevant operational situations in the workplace

In both real and simulated environments, access is required to:

relevant and appropriate materials and equipment, and

applicable documentation including organisational/network procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals

Method of assessment

As a minimum, assessment of knowledge must be conducted through appropriate written/oral tests

Practical assessment must occur:

through activities in an appropriately simulated environment, and/or

in an appropriate range of situations in the workplace

Information/documents may include:

organisational and/or network procedures and policies for managing emergencies and abnormal situations, including the relevant emergency response plan where applicable
